Abstract

Aims: Examine the effect of salt stress on the germination stage on the physiological behaviour of three leguminous grown in Côte d’Ivoire.

Methodology: The study was carried out in the plant physiology laboratory of University Félix HOUPHOUËT-BOIGNY at a temperature of 25°C. The seeds were germinated in Petri plates containing concentrations of salt (NaCl) from 0 g L-1 to 15 g L-1.

Results: Significant decreases of the germination and the growth rate of leguminous species under salt stress was observed. However, this effect varies according to the intensities of stress and the species.

Conclusion: Soybean (Glycine max L.) showed high tolerance to salt stress with a germination rate of 40% in the most severe stress conditions (15 g L-1), while the cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L.) showed a low tolerance with a germination rate of 13 % under the same condition.
