Abstract
This study analyzed the perceived effects of insecurity on the livelihood activities of farm families in Ibarapa Central Local Government Area, Oyo State, Nigeria. The specific objectives were to describe the socio-economic characteristics of farm families, determine their perception of the causes and sources of insecurity, and assess its impact on their livelihood activities. A multistage sampling technique was employed to select 130 farm families. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson Product Moment Correlation. Findings revealed that 79.23% of respondents were married, with a mean age of 46 years, household size of six persons, and an average farming experience of 10 years. The study identified pastoralist-farmer conflicts (61.54%), communal clashes (62.31%), and political disturbances (38.46%) as major sources of insecurity. The perceived effects included reduced crop yield (90.77%), lower farm income (65.38%), scarcity of food items (61.54%), and capital investment losses (60.77%). Coping strategies employed included financial assistance for victims (81.54%), provision of small-scale credit facilities (55.38%), and free healthcare services for injured individuals (53.85%). To mitigate insecurity, the study recommends stronger community-based conflict resolution mechanisms, improved security presence in affected areas, and increased financial support for affected farmers. Government and private sector collaboration in developing sustainable intervention programs is also crucial. Addressing insecurity will not only enhance agricultural productivity but also improve rural livelihoods and food security in Nigeria.
